Travel Diary - Rome, Italy

This was such a special trip for me, I was the maid of honor at my bestie's wedding in the south of Italy and she happens to be a shoemaker as well so it was like a mini-reunion with friends from the Brooklyn Shoe Space in New York. As soon as Tom caught wind of this being a destination wedding in Italy he decided we had to go to Rome first (He's listened to the history of Rome podcast 3 times already.. nerd alert!). Having never been to Italy I was totally up for checking out as much of it as possible and of course doing some footwear exploring of my own.

As you'd imagine Rome has an abundance of history, culture, amazing food and SHOES! But not surprisingly, I had to go on a treasure hunt to find a footwear supplier.

First stop a Leather accessories shop right by the Trevi Fountain. From here they sent me to a shoe repairer a few blocks away, somehow between him not speaking English, me not speaking Italian and Tom speaking broken Spanish he managed to send us to the most amazing little shoe supply shop only 1 minute walk away from our hotel!

What I found there was a treasure trove of Leather hides, trimmings, tools and to my absolute joy heels.

Needless to say, I bought as many as I could fit in my hand luggage. Can't wait to see who makes what out of these Roman heels!

I created a free 40-minute online course called 'Introduction to Shoemaking' to show how easy home shoemaking can be and to give you a little taste of what I Can Make Shoes is all about. Sign up for instant access.
